I haven’t played a first person shooter in ages and this one is as old school as it can get without being horribly dated. Along the way, he also unlocks hidden memories that reveal the backstory of the feud among the Ancients and the reason for Hoji’s exile. It turns out that there are actually three pieces of this sword and when combined, it is the only weapon that can kill these Ancients. Lo Wang allies with an ancient demon exiled to Earth named Hoji who grants him supernatural abilities and sets off after the sword. When violence breaks out, demons for some reason I can’t discern invade from another dimension called the Shadow Realm. Lo Wang is a muscle for hire tasked by wealthy industrialist Zilla to retrieve an ancient sword known as Nobitsura Kage. I had thought it to be a fairly light game I could slot in between more hefty ones but it turned out to have substantial content and was a more difficult action game than I’m used to these days.Īs far as I can tell, the story in this version has little in common with the original game beyond reused character names and some themes.

If you like bloody, fast-paced, irreverent shooters that don't really hold your hand and aren't afraid to ditch the military machismo in favor of some actual humor, Shadow Warrior is well worth the $39.99 ticket price on PS4. Gone are these hand-crafted masterpieces of design. These days we're too often caught between corridor shooters on the one hand and open-world shooters on the other. The days when level-based shooters had real level design rather than just corridors. It brings me back to the good ol' days of DOOM. They're half arena for the big mob fights and half maze, littered with secrets and gated by magic doors. I find myself using the sword at least half the time, maybe more. The weapons are all fun, and there's no shortage of ammo, meaning switching weapons is really more about play style than necessity.

There are a ton of upgrade options for weapons and for Lo Wang himself, who finds himself imbued with demonic powers after an invasion of demons from the Shadow Realm. Several levels in, I'm enjoying the hell out of Shadow Warrior. Something about the frenetic pacing, the spray-and-pray, you just never need to be quite as accurate-something I'm not really that great at when I'm not on mouse-and-keyboard. I find I'm much more at home in this type of shooter with a gamepad than I am on more modern shooters. Shooting and slashing handle extremely well on the PS4 gamepad. Yes, there are some hiccups now and again, but by and large we're talking about a very smooth experience. In any case, the fast-paced run-and-gun-and-hack-and-slash gameplay is greatly served by the smooth 60 frames-per-second.
Just adds more of that retro flavor to the game. This sort of tinkering with visuals is pretty unheard of on console releases, and it's refreshing to see the options presented here. What's more, developer Flying Wild Hog gives you tons of menu options considering this is a console game, including adjustable FOV, the ability to tinker with or fully disable the HUD, an option to turn off motion blur and more. These aren't the best visuals on a PS4 title, but they're still impressive.

The PS4 version of the game runs at a pretty steady 1080p / 60fps (Xbox One runs at 900p / 60fps) and it looks great.
